Does microneedling hurt?
Superficial microneedling of the skin is felt as a small vibration on the skin. Depending on the skin area, the skin problem and the thickness of the skin, you may also feel a little pinching and light tenderness. Microneedling treatments performed on the more superficial layers of the skin (around 0.3-0.5 mm) are typically well tolerated. In many cases, the needling can also be started more lightly, allowing the skin and the client to get used to the needling, and gradually the length of the needle can be increased. Deeper microneedling is already significantly more noticeable, but tolerable. Sometimes deeper needling can only be done locally, e.g. on local scars, but when you want, for example, comprehensive tightening of the skin, needling must be done deeper than the superficial layers of the skin, where collagen formation takes place. When the needling is done up to the dermis, a small drops of blood is also created on the surface of the skin. There is no blood drops in superficial needling.
Dermapen treatment intervals
After the Dermapen treatment, the skin begins a repair process. Depending on the customer’s skin and age, the surface of the skin renews itself in about a month, while the building of new collagen in the skin takes 5-8 weeks. The final results of the treatment are therefore not immediately visible when talking about deeper scar and firming treatments. Depending on the treatment need, skin and age, it is good to schedule the next Dermapen treatment 1-2 months after the first treatment. Your skin therapist can give an individual assessment of the number of necessary treatments and suitable treatment intervals. Due to its effectiveness, good results are often achieved with Dermapen treatments in just 2-4 treatments.
Acne, skin impurities & enlarged pores
Cleansing facials and chemical peels can enhance and speed up the treatment process. Facial treatments that cleanse the skin effectively, heat, steaming and massage are also suitable and can benefit non-inflammatory acne. In severe, inflamed acne skin, the skin should not be stimulated or squeezed, because it can only worsen the situation or cause various complications, such as the spread of bacteria, hyperpigmentation or skin scarring. Different types of chemical peels, which stimulate cell renewal and exfoliate dead skin cells, benefit both forms of acne. New treatment products and device treatments are also constantly being developed for the treatment of acne.
Dermapen microneedling is not suitable for the treatment of inflamed acne, but microneedling is a good and effective treatment for small pimples, impurities and enlarged skin pores. Lighter and more superficial microneedling is typically enough to treat pimples, unless the skin has scars or other skin problems that require deeper needling. Instead, the treatment of enlarged skin pores often requires more intensive microneedling, which affects the renewal of the skin’s texture and surface.
Acne scars
Inflammation caused by acne can damage skin tissue and collagen, and acne scars can form on the skin. There are different types of acne scars. Fresh acne scars are usually mostly red dots and spots on the skin. The color of fresh scars gradually lightens, and it can take a long time for it to lighten. The best treatment results in the treatment of acne scars are typically obtained when the acne scar is treated as soon as possible. However, it is also possible to smooth out older acne scars with Dermapen microneedling.
In addition to reddened scars, inflammatory acne often leaves pit-like scars behind. Pits can be very shallow or alternatively also deep and sharp scars. Lower scars are easier to fade, but it is also possible to achieve good treatment results for larger and more visible scars with the help of Dermapen.
When you want to make the surface of the skin and scars smoother, the Dermapen should be used to stimulate new collagen production in the skin, which means that the skin needs to be needled more intensively and deeper. Collagen production takes place deeper in the layers of the skin, which is why very superficial and light microneedling does not yet achieve visible results in the treatment of acne scars. Instead, a more superficial needling can be enough to treat skin discoloration, such as red scars. The depth of needling is always influenced by the client’s skin and the goals of the treatment.
